In March we went with “Divergent” by Veronica Roth, a
post-apocalyptic dystopian novel, set in a war torn, recovering Chicago, that has just been released as a film in
theaters nationwide. This action packed story follows “Tris”, a 16 year old who
must choose her future way of life in a ceremony set up by her community to keep the
peace. She needs to select one of five factions, each that emphasize a
particular way of thought. All young adults her age
are tested and given a result as to which faction they would most likely fit
into, but they are allowed to choose. She, however, is “divergent”, meaning,
she does not fit into one particular faction.
This categorization puts her in danger, and she must choose
a faction, hide her abilities and struggle to survive in a harsh world, and
face new challenges she never thought she would encounter. This is the first in
a trilogy and all three will likely be blockbuster films. Most of us in our
group had trouble believing we could fit into just one faction, making us
believe that one reason we relate well to the main character is that all of us
have divergence in us, we all have a little of each type of personality. It was
an enjoyable read, difficult to put down, and the movie is a very accurate portrayal
of the book (and fun to watch!).
