In April we discussed “Global Mom: Eight Countries, Sixteen
Addresses, Five Languages, One Family” by Melissa Dalton-Bradford. This is a memoir from an LDS woman’s
perspective as she and her family moved around the world supporting her
husband’s work abroad. The story begins in Norway and moves to Paris and then
on to other countries as Melissa works to fit in, helps her children, learn
languages and live life. The
balance of her viewpoint as an American living and raising children in foreign
countries and her patient, humorous and loving perspective was refreshing.
There was humor, cultural clashes, learning, growing, sorrow
and love that weave throughout the floral writing and telling of this family’s
experience. We as readers were fascinated by the cultural differences and the
dynamic abilities of this woman and her engaging children in a diverse
world. One of the sisters in our
ward, coincidentally-as she did not select this book, knew Melissa back when
she was a college student. We were able to look at pictures and hear from her
personal account of what a delightful woman the author is.
Though about half of us had not yet read the book the
discussion was full of insight on life in other countries and how there are
both things different and things the same all over the world. To top it off we
were treated with an amazing French cake!
Can’t complain about that! Overall,
it was an insightful and engaging read that was uplifting and full of true to
life experience and love.
