For December we chose “The Little Prince” by Antoine De
Saint-Exupery.
This classic and short tale about a little prince that lives on
his own planet and explores other planets asking a lot of curious questions, and touches the lives of
others on his way. Many have read this book in French class, or perhaps in some
other class in school and there was a lot to discuss. The tale is more like a
fable with some introspective observations as viewed from the eyes of a child,
and some important morals.
Most of us were impressed by what seems to be the crux of
the story, the meaningful expression of the true meaning of love and what it
really means. We also discussed the author, his storytelling and colorful
exposition of the tale, as well as his personal history that may have played a
part in bringing about this classic story that has meant so much to so many
throughout the years.
A few favorite quotes that our book club pointed out:
“And now here is my secret, a very simple secret: It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye.”
“What makes the desert beautiful,' said the little prince, 'is that somewhere it hides a well...”
“The most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or touched, they are felt with the heart.”
A really enjoyable read and one that was a sweet choice
for us to wrap up 2017.
