In September we chose the very fun and quirky "The Rosie Project" by Graeme Simsion. This was a unique romance that was filled with unexpected characters and twists in plot and a lot of genuinely funny moments. The story follows Don Tillman who is a professor of genetics that happens to be a little socially awkward. It is hinted that he has something like Asperger syndrome, though the story is not specifically about it.
Don is baffled by much of human behavior but is extremely intelligent. He begins to look for a way to see if he can find a wife and starts out with trying to have women fill out a questionnaire to sort out his potential choices. He has interesting relationships with a few people who really influence him but he is able to look at the project of finding a wife in a clinical way, but life is not that sterile.
He meets Rosie who would have failed every aspect of his 'perfect wife' questionnaire, but who teaches him a lot about human behavior. She is looking for her biological father, and as Don is a genetics expert, the two work on some wild methods in getting the DNA to test out possible matches.
The book is really fun and we all enjoyed discussing a lot of the unexpected elements of the story. Warning- there is some foul language in this book.
"Had it not been for this unscheduled series of events, her daughter and I would not have fallen in love. And I would still be eating lobster every Tuesday night. Incredible."
